We need to rethink the “dream school” mentality

So, I’m a senior, right? That means I am currently in the midst of applying to college, which is a very hard, emotional process. Today while I was walking my dogs, that got me thinking about the evolution of what I considered to be my “dream school” over the course of high school (hint: it has been different every year of high school).

Now I’m not trying to insinuate that you school have no preference as to where you want to go to college, that would be hypocritical and unrealistic. There are some schools that I can really “see” myself at more than others. Instead, what I am trying to say is that you should be open to many schools and routes.

With having one singular school that you are dead set on, you set yourself up for disappointment either way. Either a. You do not get into that school, or b. You get in but it’s different than what you are excepting. You’re limiting yourself by convincing yourself that there is only one school you could be happy at. Don’t get me wrong, this piece is kind of a message to myself as well. I kind of always thought “there is only one school for me and I have to figure out what school that is,” but that is just so untrue.

One thing that I have learned growing up in a small, conservative town is that a place is what you make of it. You can always create your own community, your own opportunities, in virtually any environment that you are in. And yes, trust me, I know that it is easier to do that in some environments compared to others, but as a general statement. Be open to change, be open to life. You’ll end up where you are supposed to, even if it does not feel like that.

Senior year is so full of uncertainty, which makes it very hard. Keep your head up! Great things are coming!
