My favorite songs and albums of the year (so far)!

2022 has already been an incredible year for music! Here is some of my favorite music from this year

Laurel Hell – Mitski

Laurel Hell is Mitski’s 6 studio album and is one of, if not, her best. Mitski’s lyrical genius really shines through as she tackles topics like forgiveness and pining through this album. Laurel Hell combines the upbeat tracks of previous album Be the Cowboy, with the melancholy and hard-hitting lyrics featured on other previous albums like Puberty 2 or Bury me at Makeout Creek. My favorite tracks from this album are “Should’ve Been Me” and “Stay Soft”. This is one of those albums that doesn’t have a single skip on it!

Being Funny In A Foreign Language – The 1975

Ok, ok, this album technically hasn’t come out at the time of releasing this, however, I can tell that it’s going to be good. The 1975 has always experimented with what genre of music they produce, but I believe that they’re best at creating teenage angst music. For example, their album The 1975 or A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. The current songs released, especially “Happiness” seem to be a return to the Alt. pop style that we all know and love the 1975 for!

The Car/ “There Better Be a Mirrorball”- Arctic Monkeys

Similar to the 1975’s album, this one hasn’t come out yet. But wow, an Arctic Monkeys and The 1975 album? Emo 15-year-old me is crying tears of joy right now. There Better Be a Mirrorball gives out similar sounds as their last album, Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, especially Star Treatment. The sounds of these last two albums are new but welcomed. It’s only natural that their sound would change as them and their audience matures. They’ve shifted from anxious teen music to smooth, eclectic beats while still maintaining a wide range of themes from teenage love to brutal heartbreak.

Once Twice Melody – Beach House

Beach House and Cigarettes After Sex both have the unique ability to make songs that sound the same, feel different, and that’s exactly what this album does. As is the case with other songs like “Space Song” Beach House pairs fairytale sounding tracks with slightly dark lyrics that draw you in. Considering Beach House’s popularity on TikTok, I am very surprised that this album didn’t become more popular than it is. Off this album, my favorite songs are: “Through Me” and “New Romance”. If you like Beach House, or have even heard of them, I cannot recommend this album enough.
